April
2009 |
| |
Donna
and Graham, our hosts, showed us a variety
of bats such as the Common and Soprano
Pipistrelle, Grey Long eared, Leisler’s
and others. |
| |
Everyone
had a great day out. The weather was
dazzling, the meal at Fat Harry’s
welcoming and the company and the banter
in the minibus was terrific. |

Cheddar
Gorge |

|
| |
|
The
venue offered a diverse day’s
activities, Gough’s Cave being
the highlight, and the walk up Jacob’s
ladder giving us a good overview of
the bat’s feeding ground in and
around the Gorge. |
|
| |
Many
species of bats roost in these caves,
the rarest of these being the greater
and lesser horseshoe bats. They are
rather elusive during the day, especially
when groups of cub Scouts come trooping
through. |
| |
Cathy
was very lucky to see a bat flying high
from one side of a high dome to the
other, then back again. |
