Paddock Workshops - winter 2008-09 (by
booking only) |
|
|
| |
We
are running a number of FREE workshops from
November to February, making use of our otherwise
free time during bat hibernation. They
will be on diverse topics, not just bats.
We are optimistic that the workshops will be
popular. This beautiful nature park, a haven
for wildlife, is on Ferry Lane, N17. There is
huge potential for a ‘Visitor and Learning
Centre’ at the Paddock. In the meantime
we use a portakabin for all workshops. Spaces
are limited, so booking is essential. Reserve
your place early to avoid disappointment.
Donations
are very gratefully received.

November, ‘An Introduction to Bats’
- Jeanette Sitton (LVB) |
As
the title says, this one hour and 30 minute
talk will introduce you to bats. We will be
looking at dispelling myths and removing taboos
of folklore and frightening reminders of horror
films. We will also cover the various bat species
in the Lee Valley, bat anatomy, their ecology
and a brief look at echolocation. The session
will end in a general discussion of first hand
‘bat experiences’, e.g. sightings,
etc. Afterwards there will be an opportunity
to explore the Paddock’s trees for potential
roosting sites come Spring.
|
| |
| 7th
December, ‘A talk on Hedgehogs’
- Epping Hedgehog Rescue |
A
general introduction to Hedgehogs, covering
their eco-benefits, population, care, what to
do if you find a hedgehog, (absolutely no bread
& milk!). Plus more. |
| |
14th
December, ‘A Layman’s Exploration
of Sound’
-
Grahame Pearce (LVB) |
Our
sense of hearing is arguably the sense that
we take most for granted. Few of us ever stop
to consider how the sounds that we are hearing
are forced produced, propagated or received.
However when it comes to bats we are to stop,
take a step back and think about the sound that
the bat detector is producing. This workshop
is intended to provide a better understanding
of how sound is perceived and to explain the
meaning of some of the technical jargon encountered.
|
| |
11th
January, ‘The importance of Riparian Habitat
for Bats' - Angeles Moragues (LVB) |
Daubenton’s
are the most active bats around water bodies.
However, a number of bat species forage along
our waterways, which are essential navigational
routes. The Daubenton’s trawl our still
waters for insects and depend on still water
habitats for survival. |
| |
18th
January, ‘Wildlife Benefits of Permaculture’
-
Irina Hoss & friends |
Permaculture
is based upon the natural patterns of energy
and material which flows within nature. Simplistically
put, Permaculture is organic gardening with
wildlife and the community in mind.
|
| |
1st
February, ‘Plants and Bats’ -
Melissa Ronaldson |
Insects
are attracted to fragrant plants. Lacewings,
moths, small beetles etc provide a meal for
any foraging bat. This workshop will explore
the types of native wild plants, (including
trees and bushes) that insects are attracted
to and ways we can encourage bats to gardens,
allotments and parkland. Contact LVB if you
would like advice on gardening for bats. We
are looking forward to Melissa presenting a
herbalism workshop for us.
|
| |
8th
February, ‘Bats in Trees’ -
Cindy Blaney, (of the London Bat Group) |
This
workshop will cover obvious and less obvious
signs of tree roosts, e.g. staining, guano,
‘chitter’, etc. Also covered: tree
location, tree types, cavities, cracks and splits).
At some point there will be an opportunity to
look at the Paddock’s trees. |
